“VOICE OF SOCIAL CHANGE – POLAND 1989 MYANMAR 2015”
SHARING THE EXPERIENCE OF DEMOCRATIC TRANSITION
2014 marks the anniversary of 25 years of freedom in Poland, regained after the years of communist regime. On the 4th of June 1989, first partially free elections took place. In 2015, citizens of Myanmar will cast their vote in the general elections. Polish Initiative “Together for Burma” is organising a series of events attempting to share the experience of democratic transition. The events will start on Wednesday, 4th of June at 6.30 pm at Yangon’s Pansodan Scene.
“Farsightedness and respect for democracy. The need to respect opponents and not to force them to have no way out, not to push them against the wall” says Lech Walesa, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 1993 in a documentary “Voice of Social Change” made by the Polish filmmakers especially for the occasion. 30-minute film presents testimonies of former political dissidents and young generation born in 1989 and their message for Myanmar. The premiere of the documentary will take place on the 4th of June 2014, at 6.30 pm at Pansodan Scene.
PENDING AUTHORISATION “Myanmar is in now in a historical moment. 2015 elections will be crucial for the future of its people” said Ambassador Jacek Perlin, the representative of the Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Bangkok seated in Yangon, who will open the event.
“ By sharing our experience of 25 years of freedom, we want to show not only what are the advantages but what might also be the challenges that people of Myanmar might face" he added.
The celebrations starting on June 4, 2014 at Pansodan Scene will last until June 9. The events are organised by three Polish NGOs that are working in Myanmar since 2012 - Other Space Foundation, Lech Walesa Institute and Cultures of the World Foundation. Apart from the premiere of the film, organisers planned a number of cultural events such as the exhibition of the photos portraying the struggle for democracy in Poland prepared jointly with European Solidarity Centre as well as the art exhibition entitled “Design for Freedom, Freedom In Design” presenting Polish design created during the period of transformation to democracy. The exhibitions will be open to public between June 4-6.
2-day solo show of the winning artist of the “Electoral Poster Competition” will start on Sunday, June 8. The goal of the competition organised as part of the “Voice of Social Change- Poland 1989 Myanmar 2015” is to select the poster encouraging people of Myanmar to vote in next year’s elections. Apart from the solo show, the winning artist will receive a smartphone.

Premiere of the documentary “Voice of Social Change”. Film shares the experience of Polish dissidents who brought down the communism and young Poles born in 1989. Art and photo exhibitions described below, will be opened. The events have the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland and the Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Bangkok seated in Yangon.
